Butterflies, insects and reptiles

Lacerta lepida - timon lepidus

ocellated lizard, eyed lizard or jeweled lacerta

Prefer places with lots of hide aways such as forest, weed and shrubs, farming land. Most spotted during day in spring and summer. Autumn and winter inactive. Lazy during hottest hours, may find them hiding between stones or in natural holes.   Avoid humidity and shade.
Feed on insects, some fruit and vegetation. Can reach up to 26 cm, the tail begin 2/3 of the total. Can climb trees. Can bite if held in your hand 🙂

Sardão – parelhagedis
As long as the cats and eagles don’t eat them all, we’ve got quite some of these.  Seeing one in a fight with a snake, and another one coming to the rescue (territorial male) was quite an amazing sight.
