Equus asinus - Mirandes

Mirandes Donkey

Burro Mirandes – Mirandes ezel
We have an entire family here at Quinta Rural, as we’re actively participating in the  ‘rescue program’ of this breed, to avoid extinction. We now have 3 mares, their fillies, and a young stallion. Unfortunately, our main stallion, Emigrante, got eaten by the wolves, but we’re happy to have 3 of his offspring here.  Find out more about donkeys, wolves and live stock protection dogs at Quinta Rural.

Lobo iberico – Iberische wolf
They’re here allright. Even spotted during a hot summers day… calmly following a flock of goats.  We’ve had our own share of ‘wolf moments’ as they have been (successfully) preying on our donkeys.

Transmontano Mastiff or Transmontano Cattle Dog) is a rare molosserworking giant dog breed, originating in and largely limited to the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro Province, Portugal. Their primary function is flock and herd protection, and their success is interlinked to the welfare of the flock and the presence of wolves, particularly. Although they are a regional breed, their wolf defense capacity has led to limited experimental importation elsewhere.
